Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA)

IRMA envisions a world where the mining industry respects the human rights and aspirations of affected communities; provides safe, healthy and supportive workplaces; minimizes harm to the environment, and leaves positive legacies.

Location: United States of America

Services, Opportunities and Events:

IRMA offers objective, independent third-party verification of industrial-scale mine sites against a comprehensive definition of responsible mining agreed to through a collaborative, multi-stakeholder process. This definition, which forms the basis of IRMA’s Standard for Responsible Mining, covers the full range of issues related to the impacts of mining.

Commitments & Key Aims:

IRMA is the answer to questions posed at its founding in 2006: What does it mean to mine responsibly and how can we assess operations at a mine site to differentiate best practices from those doing harm?

IRMA is now a global organization managing both its Standard for Responsible Mining and a system for independent verification of a mine’s performance against that standard.

For companies which use mined materials in their products, we provide a credible and comprehensive way to assess raw material sources (mines) at the very beginning of the supply chain through publicly available audit reports.

Information current as of 16 September 2021.
